This was the question posed by Khammam Member of Parliament Ramashahayam Raghurama Reddy during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on Monday. He formally inquired about the steps being taken in light of the growing influence of AI-based tools like ChatGPT. The Union Minister of State for Education, Subhas Sarkar (corrected from the incorrect name in Telugu), responded in writing.

The Government of India has introduced the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aimed at the holistic development of students. It includes introducing contemporary subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Environmental Education, and Global Citizenship Education (GCED) to enhance key student competencies.Given the rapid changes in climate, the expansion of the digital market, and the rise of AI, the NEP also emphasizes fostering a strong research and innovation ecosystem.
To promote AI in technical education, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has integrated AI into IT programs and designed specific AI courses even for non-computer science branches like Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering. These courses help integrate AI applications across various fields.
In 2021, a model curriculum for Data Science was developed. Faculty Development Programs are also being conducted to help educators stay updated with new technologies.The Ministry of Education’s platform SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) has provided over 110 free AI-related courses. Prestigious institutions like IITs and IISc offer these courses. So far, more than 4.12 million students have enrolled in them.The Government of India has approved the establishment of three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in AI focusing on health and agriculture sectors with a total budget of ₹990 crore for the financial years 2023–24 to 2027–28.
On March 7, 2024, the Government launched the IndiaAI Mission, aiming to position India as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence. To address challenges posed by AI, the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP) has been introduced to prepare teachers responsibly for academic and professional education settings.In summary, the Government is actively incorporating AI into the education ecosystem through curriculum updates, faculty training, public access to AI courses, and mission-driven national strategies.
