Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, is continuing its efforts to bring the knowledge, experience and advanced clinical expertise of eminent medical specialists from India and abroad within the reach of poor and underprivileged patients through the prestigious Srivari Vaidya Seva initiative of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
As part of this initiative, eminent Surgical Oncologist Dr. Harishankar BGV rendered specialised medical services in the Department of Surgical Oncology at SVIMS on September 17, 18 and 19. During his visit, he evaluated patients and provided expert opinions, treatment planning and specialised guidance in the management of various cancers.
Dr. Harishankar BGV is presently serving as Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology at Panimalar Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Chennai, and as Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Dr. Mehta’s Multispeciality Hospital, Chennai.
Expressing his appreciation for the opportunity, Dr. Harishankar BGV said, “As a doctor, I consider it a great honour to have an opportunity to serve the devotees of Lord Venkateswara, particularly poor and needy patients. Participating in Srivari Vaidya Seva has been a deeply fulfilling experience for me, both professionally and spiritually.”
Growing Role of Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Cancer SurgeryWith rapid advances in cancer care, endoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques are playing an increasingly important role in the management of appropriately selected cancer patients.
These advanced techniques enable surgeons, in suitable cases, to perform complex procedures through smaller incisions or natural body openings with the assistance of high-definition imaging systems and specialised instruments. They allow surgeons to operate with enhanced visualisation and precision while minimising unnecessary trauma to surrounding tissues.
Depending upon the type, location and stage of the cancer and the overall condition of the patient, minimally invasive approaches may offer important advantages such as smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stay and earlier return to normal activities.
However, the primary objective of cancer surgery remains complete and safe oncological treatment in accordance with established cancer surgery principles. Not every patient or every cancer is suitable for a minimally invasive approach. The decision between open, laparoscopic, endoscopic or other minimally invasive techniques must therefore be individualised by an experienced multidisciplinary team based on the patient’s disease and clinical requirements.
SVIMS aims to progressively strengthen exposure to such advanced surgical techniques by facilitating interaction with experienced specialists through Srivari Vaidya Seva, thereby benefiting both patients and the institution’s medical teams.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gudaru Jagadish, Director & Vice-Chancellor, SVIMS, said:

Dr. Jagadish stated that the participation of eminent specialists not only provides patients access to expert medical care but also creates a valuable academic opportunity for SVIMS faculty, residents and postgraduate students to learn from their vast experience, advanced techniques and specialised skills.
He said that Srivari Vaidya Seva therefore provides a unique platform to achieve three important objectives simultaneously:

Dr. Gudaru Jagadish made a special appeal to eminent specialists across India as well as Indian and NRI doctors serving in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, the Middle East and other parts of the world to voluntarily participate in Srivari Vaidya Seva.

Experienced specialists from Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Medical and Surgical Oncology, Orthopaedics, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Urology, Endocrinology, Paediatrics, Critical Care, Anaesthesiology, Radiology and other super-speciality disciplines were invited to associate themselves with this humanitarian initiative.
A Platform for Service, Science, Skills and Humanity SVIMS, with the support of TTD, intends to further expand Srivari Vaidya Seva with the vision of “bringing world-class medical expertise to the doorstep of the poor.”
